What is a First Look and Should You Do One?

One wedding tradition that dominated for centuries was for the Bride and Groom not to see each other before the ceremony. But some have chosen to forgo this tradition and include a newer trend, the “First Look.”

A first look is where the couple meets up earlier on their wedding day. It’s a special moment just between the two of them. Nobody else except the photographer is present. Some might wonder why couples have chosen to do this. But, there are lot of perks to having a first look.

PERKS

  1. A first look is magical. Sometimes when people have everyone watching them as they walk down the aisle, glancing back and forth from the groom to the bride, it feels less magical for the couple. Grooms won’t get as emotional because everybody is watching. But during a. first look, there is intimacy and quiet. Brides and grooms get to share a moment to reflect back on their story and think about this monumental step they are about to take. It helps soothe the nerves.

  2. More Time with Guests. First looks aren’t just about quality time for the couple, there are practical aspects too. For example, when a couple chooses to have a first look, they can get more photos done before the ceremony. Meaning that after the ceremony, you can spend more time with your guests and get to eat all that delicious food sooner rather than later.

  3. Photo op. Photography is such a huge part of the wedding ceremony—but cramming in all the desired angles and moments can be daunting during the actual ceremony when guests are seated at random, tall people get in the way, everyone has their phones out, and we are trying to remain hidden. But, during the first look, the couple are the only people present, and my second shooter and I can stand wherever we want. to ensure that we get both of your beautiful faces.

STILL UNSURE?

No big deal. I always tell my brides, that however. they imagined that moment, do that. Ultimately, this day is about you. The timeline is made around you. People are here for you. The food can wait. The reception can wait.
